It has been quite a long time since our country relies mainly on petroleum products as the common source of energy. From cars, equipments, and even machines from plants and factories, gasoline and oil are definitely our basic necessities. Nevertheless, we are facing a major crisis in petroleum supply.
As one of the large importer of petroleum product in the world, Philippines is certainly in deep trouble of declining its economy in a vast. For this reason, the government should take its action in resolving this threatening catastrophe of our nation. One possible solution is getting an alternative source of energy, which can minimize or further substitute oil.
During an energy summit in Manila last January, Juan Miguel Arroyo, chairman of the congressional committee on energy, declared that our government should take serious thoughts about this matter. An establishment of a more centralized programme of energy development from a variety of available and indigenous sources should be taken into consideration that is for a cost. This would also make us one key competitor in the world market. He also pointed out that we should all take part in conservation of our environment as well as share our knowledge as to how to resolve this struggle against expensive imported oil.
Also at the energy summit, it was cited by Jose Juliano, a Physics Doctorate with the National Academy of Science and Technology, that Nuclear is a big power source. He signified it by mentioning the number of nuclear energy projects in Asia intended to supply the growing demand for energy in the region. He also constituted the nuclear power plant built in the Philippines in the 1970, which did not become operational due to the unsafe condition that the government has indicated. An eight-man team, from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), now investigates it; to see whether it can still serve its purpose and be rehabilitated.
Kevin Rodolfo, professor at the National Institute of Geological Sciences, said that Geothermal is a more innovative option as energy source, although he admitted that there are still some works to be done regarding this matter. One is that the transmission of electricity from the power plant is traveling a long distance through electric lines causing intolerable power consumption. With this, 17 percent of electricity is lost during transmission only.
An additional of 4,680 megawatts could be acquired from geothermal, hydroelectric, wind, solar and biomass energy by the year 2013;This was justified by Catherine Maceda, spokeswoman of the Renewable Energy Coalition of non-government organizations. By then the group also appeal for a bill to be passed that will grant incentives for the renewable energy development and research projects.
