Geothermal Engineering was once offered in Bicol University (BU) College of Engineering in Legazpi City, Philippines. Four years after the introduction to students, the course was frozen to upgrade it into a graduate program (Energy Technology) as embodied in BU ComDev Plan. Engr. Medel Aligan (who designed and proposed the diploma course on Energy Technology) foresees this excellent program as another stepping stone for the aspiring masteral degree holders.

BU LEGAZPI- Engr. Medel Aligan announced that they were asked to study the possibility of offering BS MINING ENGINEERING in Bicol University. "Off hand, this would be a ladderized course, starting from certificate in mining operations, diploma in mining technology & ultimately BS Mining eng'g." Engr. Aligan said, "we are targetting small scale miners, small mining companies (metallic & non-metallic) not only those big-time players. we are looking at the other side of the mining industry w/ emphasis on responsible mining, env't and safety / health," he added.
