Geothermal Engineering was once offered in Bicol University (BU) College of Engineering in Legazpi City, Philippines. Four years after the introduction to students, the course was frozen to upgrade it into a graduate program (Energy Technology) as embodied in BU ComDev Plan. Engr. Medel Aligan (who designed and proposed the diploma course on Energy Technology) foresees this excellent program as another stepping stone for the aspiring masteral degree holders.

last year i was writing a book about Geothermal energy. i have actually accomplished 80% of the book when suddenly some systems of my pc broke down! grrrrrrrrrr! i was just about to buy a flash disk to store the data but it was too late. yargh!. i have worked on that book for two months. huhuhuhuh talaga! i was so disappointed. i have just printed the draft of the first two chapters. i really regret the effort that i have given for that accomplishment. hay. two months have just come to waste.

i remember the first chapter was about geothermal energy. the second was about geotehrmal exploration. and the third was  geothermal exploitation and drilling.

it was supposed to be a book that i wanted to be published for the remaining batch of BS Geothermal ENgineering in our college (Bicol University College of ENgineering). 

well maybe i should take it as a lesson to back up all necessary files from time to time… grrrrrrr.. however, i haven’t got over it yet..huhuhuhu..two months..=(

meanwhile, let me just take you to a tour around a geothermal power plant:

these are  geysers, which are examples of  geothermal manifestations. other manifestations may be in the form of steaming ground, volcano, mud pools, hot pools, and more..

Before geothermal exploitation takes place, geophysicists, geochemists, and geologists work hand in hand for the geothermal exploration. They study teh details of the geothermal area and calculate the most probable area for the setting off of the geothermal plant. they estimate the point where drilling or exploitation must be conducted. Roughly, each well costs about 75M. thus, it is a very risky job for these professionals!

As you can see, a geothermal palnt set up is consisted of two important wells: the production and the reinjection wells. the steam from the production can come in pure steam or in two-phase (steam and water). the brine (unused/waste water) is reinjected to the ground so as to convey an environmental-friendly operation.
