MANILA, July 30 (Reuters) - Two groups submitted formal bids at an auction for the sale of two geothermal plants on the Philippines’ main island of Luzon, the government said on Wednesday.
The groups which submitted bids for 289-megawatt Tiwi and 458.53 megawatt Makban geothermal facilities were AP Renewables of the Aboitiz Group and First Luzon Geothermal Energy, an investment vehicle fully owned by PNOC-Energy Development Corp (EDC.PS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz).
Korea Electric Power Corp (KEPCO) (015760.KS: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), which was on an earlier list of bidders, has withdrawn from the auction, said an official of PSALM, the state agency overseeing the sale of government power plants.
PSALM will announce the highest bidder later on Wednesday. There have been no details of the auction’s floor price. read more
MANILA, PHILIPPINES:The Philippines’ Department of Energy (DOE) this week awarded three geothermal service contracts to Guidance Management Corporation (GMC), Biliran Geothermal Inc. (BGI), and Basic Energy Corporation (BEC) to explore and develop the geothermal contract areas in Amacan, Biliran and Mabini, respectively.
The areas were offered during DOE’s Philippine Energy Contracting Round (PECR).
Energy Secretary Angelo T. Reyes stated,”With rising international oil prices, the government is aggressively moving towards a sustainable system with renewable energy playing an increasingly prominent, viable and competitive fuel option.”
The DOE, in its mission to achieve energy independence, is encouraging the private sector to invest in geothermal exploration activities through the PECR to harness the country’s vast potential in geothermal energy.
The Amacan geothermal prospect in Compostela Valley has a target capacity of 20 MW to 40 MW. GMC, a synergy between a Filipino mining group led by Joaquin Rodriguez and Australian mining and energy players, will conduct geological and geophysical surveys in the first two years before drilling exploratory wells.
GMC has previously entered into a joint venture project with Aragorn Power and Energy Corp. for a geothermal service contract in the Kalinga province and with the Green Fuel Corp. on a PHP$150 million (US$3.2 million) joint biofuel project.
The contract area in the Biliran province also has a 20 MW to 40 MW target capacity. The Biliran geothermal development project is located on the island of Biliran in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines, just a few kilometers north of the island of Leyte. One of the smallest provinces in the Philippines, Biliran encompasses 214 square miles (555 sq km) and is estimated to hold at least 100 MW of geothermal energy.
Envent Holding Philippines Incorporated announced today the signing of a Geothermal Service Contract for Biliran Island in Leyte, Philippines. Envent is a renewable energy business dedicated to the exploration and development of geothermal sources in the Philippines.
Envent is currently working on several geothermal projects in the Philippines and is committed to contributing to the Philippine government’s target of an additional 1,200 MW of renewable energy by 2013. Envent’s key shareholders are Reykjavik Energy Invest and Geysir Green Energy, both global leaders in developing the renewable energy sector, with specific focus on geothermal energy. Both companies are based in Iceland where an impressive 100% of the power capacity is derived from renewable sources (23% geothermal and 77% hydro).
The Biliran Geothermal Development Project is located on the island of Biliran in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. An island province, Biliran lies just a few kilometers north of the island of Leyte. One of the smallest provinces in Philippines, Biliran is 555km2, with a population of 140,000 (2000 census). Its capital is Naval. The mountainous island is considered a compound volcano with a single historic eruption in 1939. It is estimated that Biliran has at least 100 MW of geothermal energy.
The upstream part of the project will be executed by Envent’s associate company Biliran Geothermal Incorporated.

Tacloban City (August 17) — The National Geothermal Association of the Philippines conducted a series of geothermal lectures with the goal of strengthening ties with local geothermal practitioners and geothermal engineering students.
The lectures conducted yesterday at the Eastern Visayas State University which is one of the few schools which offers geothermal engineering. The lecture series highlighted the associations accomplishments and showcased the province of Leyte s geothermal technology as a viable alternative source of energy which made the Philippines the worlds second largest geothermal producing country and made the Filipinos world class geothermal experts.
Among the topics during the whole day lecture-series are Reservoir Engineering by Anthony J. Menzies of Chevron, Geothermal Systems by Engr. Jose Rufino S. Penaranda of PNOC-EDC and Environmental Management/Corporate Social Responsibility by Engr. Emiliano C. Agoncillo.
Also included are Geothermal Energy Technology by Engr. Edwin Alcober of PNOC-EDC and Geothermal Corrosion and Control by Engr. Ruperto R. Villa, Jr. of PNOC-EDC.
The lecture series is one of the activities in the three-day NGAP Roadshow which is being spearheaded by the PNOC.
Participants to these activities are EVSU students from graduate studies, geothermal engineering students, and member-prospects like businessmen, contractors and corporation personnel.
The road show will end with a field trip to the PNOC-Energy Development Corporations Leyte Geothermal Production Field (LGPF) facility based in Ormoc City and Kananga, Leyte. LGPF is the worlds largest wet steam field with the worlds largest power station under one roof, the 231-MWe Malitbog power plant. more
