COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

RATIONALE:

The Bicol University graduates more than a hundred engineering students every year from ithe following course: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemical engineering and geothermal engineering. Some of these do no take the board examinations but instead enroll in graduate programs not along their fields of specialization.
Similarly, the PNOC-Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC) and Chevron Phil Holdings Inc. (formerly UNOCAL) and other industries in the province have many employees who are licensed engineers but do not have the time to pursue graduate studies along their fields of specialization except those who were able to pursue Graduate Diploma courses at the Geothermal Institute, University of Auckland, New Zealand or United Nations University, Iceland. Hence, most of them take up graduate programs not related to their specializations such as Master of Arts in Public Administration, Master in Management, Law, etc.
Presently, no academic institution offers Graduate Diploma in Energy Technology in the Philippines. Leading universities like the University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, Technological University of the Philippines and Mapua Institute of Technology offer either MS Mechanical Engineering or Master in Mechanical Engineering with specializations.

Internationally, the University of Auckland (New Zealand) used to offer a Graduate Diploma in Geothermal Energy Technology but due to financial constraints, the program was stopped in 2002. This year, 2007, a Post Graduate Certificate in Geothermal Technology is currently offered but financed by the University. The University of Melbourne offers Graduate Diploma of Engineering (Energy Studies) leading to a higher degree by coursework. Other universities in UK, Australia and Asia (India, Thailand) offer similar diploma programs, e.g. PGD Renewable Energy, Energy Management, Graduate Diploma Program in Energy Technology leading to MS & PhD in Energy Technology (King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand and the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand); Graduate Diploma in Engineering Technology; Graduate Diploma in Sustainable Energy, etc.

OBJECTIVES

The proposed Graduate Diploma in Energy Technology aims to:
• Provide the graduate students a more solid foundation of the engineering sciences as applied in the energy industry;
• To produce graduates with an increased capacity for understanding theoretical concepts and contemporary issues of various aspects of renewable energy.
• To produce graduates who have in-depth knowledge and understanding of the scientific, technological, and socio-economic principles and techniques upon which energy technologies are founded.
• To produce graduates with an extended capability to apply knowledge and skills in identifying, developing, analyzing and appraising solutions to a range of renewable energy problems.
• To enable graduates to apply the skills and knowledge acquired in the program in a mature professional manner to a field of work appropriate to their chosen career.

This area of specialization aims to train graduates for positions in regional and national institutions, research and development departments of industries and energy utilities, energy conservation agencies and consulting firms. This new program provides a pathway for engineers and scientists, or those with an alternative acceptable qualification and significant experience in industry, to gain a graduate diploma qualification in the growing area of ‘sustainable energy’.

The graduates from this program will be able to take a lead role in their organizations in:
• Developing and implementing plans to improve energy efficiency and productivity
• Researching, developing, demonstrating, commercializing, designing and evaluating innovative energy supply, storage and utilization technologies
• Devising innovative sustainable solutions to current problems associated with adverse environmental and social impacts associated with energy supply, distribution and consumption
• Maintaining and optimizing the performance of installed sustainable energy technologies and systems
• Managing consultative processes with social groups impacted by energy-related projects and developments
• Training and raising awareness of fellow employees in the opportunities afforded by sustainable energy practice

PROGRAM CONTENT AND STRUCTURE
The program aims to cater to engineering graduates (geothermal, mechanical, electrical, chemical and industrial) from different schools within the region and current employees of the Phil National Oil Company (PNOC-EDC) and Chevron Phil Holdings Inc (Unocal) who want to pursue graduate studies. Also included are engineers working in the local industries.

 This will be offered to applicants who have studied a minimum of four year undergraduate course in a discipline that provides a sound background for further studies in engineering sciences. It has been designed to meet the theoretical and practical needs of professionals working in the field of energy use and planning, both in government and private sectors.
The program provides participants with a broad understanding of the range of technologies, both conventional and non-conventional, that can be used for energy supply.

Energy System Design- Design of energy systems, utilization, optimization and maintenance, exergy analysis; Designing a workable system or an optimum system. Engineering economics. Energy Efficiency (Systems Analysis & Auditing)-
Methodologies for quantitative analysis of the energy use and efficiency of equipment, processes and systems, Mass and energy balances, thermodynamics, exergy, air psychrometrics, heat transfer and heat exchangers, site energy supply systems including cogeneration, process integration (pinch technology), auditing.
Energy Modeling and Project Management- Input / Output Analysis, Energy Modeling, Project Evaluation & Management,

Technology Futures and Business Strategy - Technology forecasting, analysis of previous attempts to predict energy use; relevant technological development; social and environmental impacts of current and emerging technologies; technology transfer; integration into business plan.

 

UPD offers MS Energy Eng’g (30 units) and PhD Energy Eng’g
Option of PhD Energy Eng’g straight from BS -45 units, w/ MS EgyE – 24 units or with MS non-EgyE – 24 units;
